Listed below are some of the physical side effects that are common.

These side effects may vary from woman to woman. If you are experiencing physical side effects do not appear to be normal or are more extreme, you need to be seen by a physician. Do not wait - you may need to go to an emergency room.

Some Common Side Effects Include:

  • Bleeding: Some bleeding and spotting that may last 2-6 weeks. Ranges from light to moderate. For continued heavy bleeding, seek emergency medical help.

  • Discharge: Mucus-like discharge ranging in color (brown to dark.) If this does not lessen or increases after several days, or if the odor becomes strong, go to the doctor.

  • Pain/Cramping: Pressure in the lower abdomen. Similar to a menstrual cramp as the uterus returns to its normal state. Pain that increases or does not go away is an indication to seek medical treatment.

  • Fatigue: Feeling of tiredness and exhaustion is normal. Take vitamins, drink lots of fluids, get extra rest and avoid vigorous exercise for several days. Slowly increase mild exercise. Avoid junk food. Do not drink alcohol or use prescribed drugs.

  • Infection: Fever is a symptom that may indicate an infection. This can occur if there is retained fetal tissue, you had an STI at the time of the abortion, or due to other reasons. If you have a fever, call your doctor right away. If the abortion provider has given you antibiotics, take all of them as prescribed. If fever persists, go to the emergency room.

  • Depression: This is a very common experience following an abortion. Usually the symptoms are temporary. They may come and go. However in some women depression can become more intense until after the due date of the pregnancy. Here are some things to do if you are feeling depressed. Call us at 505-880-0882. A Woman’s Emotions After Abortion

Every woman responds differently both physically and emotionally after an abortion. There is no right or wrong way to feel after an abortion. Many women are surprised by the emotional turbulence they experience. Some women may feel a sense of guilt or grief after an abortion. Others report an immediate sense of relief. Some experience a delayed negative reaction as they slowly slide into depression and a decreased interest in their life. Others speak of a general sense of loss, fear or anger. Many report feeling these effects and emotions for years after the abortion. If left uncared for, these emotions can begin to disrupt normal life. The good news is that you do not have to live with these negative emotions. Help is available.

Care Net is here for your emotional care after abortion. If you are experiencing distress or anxiety over this event in your life, we can help. Our counselling and resourcing programs are open to helping you heal from any emotional trauma and recover from an abortion.

Here are some commonly reported emotional and behavioural symptoms:

  • Repressing Emotion - feels like a need to avoid feeling any emotion.

  • Increased Feelings of Anger – may also come with a sense of being out of control

  • Increased Violence – some women report they act out more violently when angered

  • Fear - this can be simply a sense of fear for unknown reasons or a fear of others finding out

  • Loss of Self-confidence – often expressed as feeling bad about themselves or guilty

  • Increased Need to be in Control

  • Desire to Hide - sometimes referred to as isolation or loneliness that disrupts relationships

  • Change to Sexual Behaviors – womens’ reactions vary. Increased sexual risk taking or sexual avoidance are two extremes. Some women report pain during intercourse.

  • Nightmares and Inability to Sleep – visions/thoughts of things related to the abortion experience cause some women to have trouble sleeping

  • Romantic Relationship Difficulty – Frequently women in abortion “recovery” programs express difficulty trusting men and express other fears that interfere with later relationships. Some studies indicate a rise in domestic violence and abuse after an abortion.

  • Eating Disorders - a significant number of women report beginning abusing food (either too much or too little) after an abortion

  • Self Harm - harming one’s self can take many forms. It is common for women to increase or begin using substance abuse as means to deal with whatever pain or loss they are experiencing. In a few cases, women stop taking care of themselves and ignore basic hygiene.

  • Suicidal Thoughts - Numerous studies show that more than half of post abortive women will entertain thoughts of suicide at some point following the abortion. One study found that nearly one third of the respondents had attempted suicide. Suicidal thoughts are an indication of depression.
